Supplementation with Nigella sativa oil improves cardiovascular parameters and oxidative stress in diabetic patients
This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical study evaluated among 50 patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) the effects of 8 weeks supplementation with either 1000 mg/d of Nigella sativa oil or placebo on serum C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), malondialdehyde (MDA), fasting blood sugar (FBS), and lipid profile.
Results showed that Nigella sativa oil consumption was significantly associated with decrease in FBS (p < 0.001), triglyceride (p < 0.001), total cholesterol (p < 0.001), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p < 0.001), serum hs-CRP, MDA (p < 0.001) and increase in serum level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p < 0.001) compared with placebo group.
In conclusion this study showed that Nigella sativa oil supplement appears to have cardiovascular protective effects in patients with T2DM, by improving the lipid profile and glycemia, reducing the C-reactive protein level and the lipid peroxidation.
