Effects of an extract of Andrographis paniculata on the reduction of pain in subjects with osteoarthritis of the knee.
This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted to assess the efficacy of supplementation during 84 days, with an Andrographis paniculata extract (300 or 600 mg/d), on osteoarthritis pain in 103 patients with knee osteoarthritis.
Patients supplemented with 300 or 600 mg/day of the extract showed a significant reduction in pain at days 28, 56, and 84 compared with a placebo group. WOMAC stiffness scores, physical function score, and the fatigue score showed a significant improvement with both doses of supplement compared with the placebo group. At the end of the study, the quality of life and functional assessment of chronic illness therapy scores showed significant improvements with both doses compared with the placebo group.
In conclusion, Andrographis paniculata extract in 300 and 600 mg/day dosages were found to be effective in reducing pain in individuals suffering from mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis.
