A mixture of Andrographis paniculata and Withania somnifera extracts improves cognitive functions and shows calming and anxiolytic properties in the elderly
This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled two-armed cross-over study evaluated the effects of 4 weeks supplementation with a blend of extracts from Andrographis paniculata (800 mg/d of herb dry native extract) and Withania somnifera (300 mg/d of roots and dry leaf extract) on cognitive functions and sleep disorders among 16 elderly subjects experiencing mild cognitive impairment.
Results showed that the blend of Andrographis paniculata and Withania somnifera significantly improved cognitive performance in the d2-Test for attention and the concentration performance test after four weeks’ treatment, and was positively correlated with increases in delta and theta power in the quantitative electroencephalogram compared with placebo during cognitive challenges.
In conclusion Andrographis paniculata and Withania somnifera extracts blend exhibits a calming and anxiolytic effect without sedation, and is associated with overall stress-protective activity.
