As of July, a mandatory law requiring Vermont residents to compost food waste took effect.  The new legislation, called Act 148 (The Universal Recycling Law), bans food scraps from trash bins along with clean yard debris.  It is now illegal to throw away food scraps such as organics like eggs, dairy, fruits, vegetables, bones, etc. and kitchen waste in the main trash bins.  This is an example of state legislation designed to minimize waste and push towards more environmentally sound approaches to waste disposal.  Much of the compost from organics can be used as a soil conditioner, and Vermont is one of the first states to promote such legislation.
