Update on Titanium Dioxide Status in Europe

Regulation 2022/63 will enter effect on February 7, 2022, banning the use of titanium dioxide as a food additive. Titanium dioxide has been used to impart a white color to many foods including soups and sauces. It may still be used in pharmaceutical applications and packaging materials. Titanium dioxide will no longer be permitted as a dual use additive. It is understood that for now titanium dioxide will remain a permitted food additive the UK under retained legislation.  The Food Standards Agency has conducted an independent review of the ESFA opinions, and the UK’s Scientific Advisory Committees are also examining the issue. These independent committees will continue to review titanium dioxide throughout the year and plan to complete a risk assessment by early 2023.
