New Infant Formula Recalls

Yesterday the US FDA announced that several infant formula products made by a single European manufacturer are being recalled for not meeting the agency’s iron standards.  The FDA stated that the infant formulas contain insufficient amounts of iron particularly for infants born prematurely or at low birth weight. Babies who do not get enough iron can develop iron deficiency anemia which leads to irreversible cognitive and functional issues.  The FDA requires that infant formula products containing less than 1mg of iron per 100 calories must include a label statement indicating that additional iron may be necessary.  The recalled products did not include this mandatory statement.  These products were manufactured in Europe and sold in the United States via a website.
