FDA Announces Qualified Health Claim for Certain Cranberry Products
On July 21, the US Food and Drug Administration announced in a letter of enforcement discretion that it does not intent to object to certain qualified health claims regarding consuming specific cranberry products and a reduced risk of recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI) in healthy women. A health claim characterizes the relationship between a substance and a disease or health related condition. After review of the petition, FDA concluded there was not significant agreement to permit an authorized health claim around cranberry products and UTIs, and the petitioner, Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc., agreed to have the claim evaluated as a qualified health claim petition instead.
