FDA Amends List of Color Additives to Include Butterfly Pea Flower Extract

Earlier this month the US FDA amended the “List of Color Additives Exempt from Certification” to include Butterfly Pea Flower Extract. Butterfly pea flower is a plant species belonging to the Fabaceae family. It is native to Asia and Africa and contains the antioxidant proanthocyanidin which yields a range of blue and purple colors. Approved use applications include both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, chewing gum and confectionery, teas, coated nuts, and other applications. FDA approved the color additive for use at GMP and noted no safety concerns.
