WHO Recommends Limit Values for Salt Content in Food
According to the World Health Organization, about 11 million deaths worldwide are due to dietary risk factors including consumption of sugar, salt, and fat. Approximately 3 million of these deaths can be attributed to excessive consumption of salt. Earlier this month, WHO recommended that personal daily salt intake should not exceed 5 grams. This limit value is largely based on the established fact that a high-level of salt consumption can increase blood pressure and therefore lead to cardiovascular disease. Eating too much salt can also cause kidney disease, chronic liver disease and obesity. According to WHO’s 2020 Global Nutrition Report, salt consumption has only decreased by 0.2% last year instead of the 2.4% reduction target previously set by WHO.
