Potential Honey Fraud
29 December 2020
According to several sources, the sales of honey have increased greatly during the pandemic due to its perceived immunity strengthening properties. Earlier this month the Center for Science and the Environment (CSE) claimed that some honey brands in India may be adulterated even though the honey passed the government standards for safety. The honey was adulterated with a cheaper sugar syrup that may have been traced to Chinese companies who produce the same in India. It is generally understood that the adulteration of honey does not present an immediate safety concern, and this situation may spur FSSAI to create stricter standards for honey.
