Oral methylsulfonylmethane for skin beauty

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is an organosulfur compounds widely used in beauty products. The aim of this trial was to determine the clinical efficacy of MSM after oral supplementation.

In the first part of the study, 20 participants ingested 3 g MSM or a placebo for 16 weeks. In a second part, 63 participants ingested 1 or 3 g MSM for 16 weeks. Results of part I showed that MSM is able to reduced signs of ageing, like facial wrinkles (p < 0.05) and skin roughness (p < 0.05) in comparison to placebo. In part II, MSM improved the severity of facial wrinkles, skin firmness, elasticity and skin hydration (p < 0.05). A dose-response was observed for soma parameters. However, the authors indicated that 1 g/day of MSM is sufficient to reduce the facial signs of ageing.

In conclusion, oral supplementation with MSM (1 g/day) is effective to improve skin parameters and to reduce signs of facial ageing.
