A supplement containing collagen, acerola extract and vitamins improves hydration, elasticity, roughness and density of the skin.

This randomized, placebo-controlled, blind study evalauted among 72 healthy women, aged 35 years or older,  the effects of 12 weeks of daily supplementation with a blend of 2.5 g of collagen peptides, acerola fruit extract, vitamin C, zinc, biotin, and a native vitamin E complex on skin aging and skin health, measured by objective and validated methods (corneometry (skin hydration), cutometry (elasticity), use of silicon skin replicas with optical 3D phase-shift rapid in vivo measurements (PRIMOS) (roughness), and skin sonography (density)). The sustainability of the changes induced by the product was evaluated during the 4 weeks after supplementation. Safety and tolerability were also evaluated.

The test product was well tolerated and no pathological skin reactions, irritancy reactions or allergic reactions were noted. The product significantly improved skin hydration, elasticity, roughness, and density (p < 0.0001). These positive effects were substantially retained during the 4 weeks follow-up.

In conclusion, objective dermatological measurements, such as cutometry and corneometry, have proven that oral collagen peptides together with other dermonutrients significantly improve skin hydration, elasticity, roughness, and density after 12 weeks of intake.
