A fiber-enriched orange juice has acute effects on blood glucose and satiety
This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study has examined the acute effects of a fiber-enriched orange juice. 10 healthy subjects have consumed a placebo (regular orange juice) or a fiber-enriched juice (1.4 g/100 mL) in a crossover order. Postprandial glucose, insulin, gut hormones and satiety feelings have been measured every 15-30 min for 2 hours.
Results showed a reduction in post-prandial serum glucose and insulin levels at 15 min with the fiber-enriched juice compared to placebo. Moreover, a significant effect on qualitative feelings of satiety and fullness was observed at 15 min and 2 hours. This was accompanied by a reduction in GLP1 response at 15 min. No change in leptin, GIP and ghrelin have been noted.
Therefore, these results show that a fiber-enriched orange juice can improve post-prandial glucose and insulin, as satiety feelings, through a GLP1-dependent mechanism.
