FDA Announced New Egg Regulatory Standards
The US FDA recently released new regulatory standards for improving egg and egg product food safety. In conjunction with NERO (National Egg Regulatory Officials) the FDA announced a new program for state egg regulators entitled the Egg Regulatory Program Standards (ERPS). The standards are designed to integrate the regulatory activities of partner agencies and streamline processes which should improve egg safety in the U.S. As the FDA moves toward integrating food safety resources and enhancing partnerships as part of FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act), uniform standards and process for eggs and egg products are crucial. The new program standards apply to regulatory programs, not producers of eggs. Thus far there are ten individual standards. The ERPS also provides the foundation for mutual reliance on inspections and other work conducted by state and federal agencies.
