UK Issues Recommendations on Greenwashing

UK regulators are preparing to tackle the issue of greenwashing and have warned food businesses that misleading environmental claims will be investigated and addressed. The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) recently published draft guidance as to the types of misleading environmental claims that would be considered noncompliant. The draft guidance also explains the best ways for companies to communicate their green credentials to consumers. Organic claims are addressed in the guidance as well as terms like “reduced plastic packaging”.  CMA believes that up to 40% of current green claims made by companies in many sectors may be misleading.
