Sage for reducing menopausal symptoms
This double-blinded, randomized, and placebo-controlled study examined the effects of a sage extract (300 mg/day for 3 months) in postmenopausal women complaining of menopausal symptoms. 66 women have been enrolled. The authors used the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS° and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess the effects of the supplementation.
Results showed a reduction in the scores of the MRS for flushing, palpitation, sleeping disorders, muscle and joint aches, depression, nervousness, anxiety and sexual desire/satisfaction in the supplemented group in comparison to placebo (p < 0.001 for all). In addition, the mean PSQI score has been also reduced by the supplementation, highlighting a significant improvement in sleep.
These results suggest therefore sage extract may be used for the management of menopausal symptoms and menopause-associated sleep disorders.
