Sacramento to Recycle Green Waste

Sacramento County, California will soon require residents to recycle green waste using separate organic waste bins. To prevent organic waste from going to landfills, it can no longer be dumped into regular trash bins. Organic waste includes fruit and vegetable scraps, meat and eggs, yard trimmings, coffee filters, bones, etc. The new state mandate takes effect on July 1, 2022. The mandate’s goal is to reduce short-lived pollutants in landfills due to the large volume of discarded food scraps. The mandate is supported by an education program, and residents will be provided with green bins prior to July 1. Other states, cities, and counties are considering similar measures.
