According to the European Regulation (EU) 2015/2283, a Novel Food is defined as any food that was not used for human consumption to a significant degree within the European Union before 15 May 1997, when the first Regulation on novel foods came into force (Regulation (EC) 258/97).
The Novel Food Catalogue, available on the European Commission’s website for many years, serves as a reference document to assist companies in determining the novel food status of an ingredient.
