NOP Proposed Amendments to Allowed and Prohibited Substances
The National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances (National List) identifies the synthetic substances allowed in organic farming and the non-synthetic substances that are prohibited for the same. The NOSB (National Organic Standards Board) evaluates each substance to determine its compatibility with organic production and handling. Tamarind seed gum is GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) when used as a thickener, stabilizer, or emulsifier in processed foods. Last month, the national list has been amended to allow nonorganic tamarind seed gum when organic tamarind seed gum is not available in commercial quantities. The onus of proving commercial availability is on the manufacturers, and this includes traceability requirements as well.
