New Environmental Labeling System Announced
Belgian academics have unveiled a new environmental labeling system that enables easy recognition of the degree of sustainability of food and beverages at point of sale. The label is called Enviroscore and is based on the Product Environmental Footprint approved by the European Commission. The system measures environmental impact of products using the universally accepted methodology of the standardized product environmental footprint and allows companies to measure and communicate impact in simple terms understood by most consumers. Enviroscore is an algorithm that considers sixteen different life cycle environmental impacts including ozone layer depletion, water pollution, toxicity, etc. Enviroscore is already operational, and industry experts expect more labeling systems of this kind to emerge.
