Korea Issues Food Additives Amendment

Earlier this month the Korea Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) released its Partial Amendment on Korea Food Additives Code / Korea Food Additives Standard and Specification 2021-19.  The document expands the scope of recognition for the natural occurrence of food additives, including a newly established provision for the natural occurrence of benzoic acid.  Benzoic acid occurs naturally in many plants and fruits including strawberries, bilberries, and cranberries.  It is also naturally present in some spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg. The document defines what constitutes a natural occurrence for benzoic acid and contains revised use levels for six other additives including sorbic acid.  The amendment becomes effective on March 9, 2021.
