FDA Using More Definitive Method to Analyze Sulfites in Food

The FDA says a new analytical method it is using to quantify the level of sulfites in food samples is more efficient, accurate and less expensive than its previous method. Sulfites are widely used food preservatives but can produce allergic responses and have serious health implications for some people. A new regulation authorizing the new method will take effect February 17. The agency says manufacturers remain free to use any scientifically adequate method they like to measure sulfite concentrations. Currently, sulfites must be declared on food labels at levels of 10ppm or greater.
