Europe Commits to Phase out Caged Farming

On June 30, the European Commission agreed to phase out caged farming under the Farm to Fork strategy. Cages for most farm animals will be banned in response to a citizens’ initiative ‘End the Cage Age’. Laying hens, sows, and calves are already covered by rules on caging. The EC’s new commitment will ban caged farming for rabbits, pullets, quail, ducks, and geese. The Commission is assessing the feasibility of working towards of enforcement of the ban in 2027. It is believed that animal welfare legislation is a significant part of more sustainable farming and food systems.
