EU Introduces Ambitious Chemicals Strategy

In 2006, the EU introduced REACH, the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals, and now introduced its biggest reform with the goal of protecting citizens and environment, and giving a leg-up to innovation of more sustainable chemicals. The European Commission published the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability Towards a Toxic-Free Environment on 14 October 2020 which still needs to be approved by the European Council and the European Parliament. This is another step toward the European Green Deal which includes a goal of zero pollution. Potentially harmful substances, such as endocrine disruptors and PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are on the list of products to be phased out, unless these substances are proven essential and no alternative is available.
