EFSA Updates Nanoscience Guidance

EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) has updated its guidance on assessing health risks associated with the application of nanoscience and nanotechnologies in the human food and animal feed chains.  The guidance, now considered Scientific Committee Guidance (SC Guidance on Nano-RA), covers novel foods, food contact materials, food and feed additives, and pesticides.  It was updated to consider scientific characterization studies that provide insights to physical-chemical properties, exposure assessment and hazard characterization of nanomaterials.  A tiered framework for toxicological testing was also outlined.
