EFSA Determines Mealworms Are Safe for Human Consumption

Earlier this month, the European Food Safety Authority determined that yellow mealworms are safe for human consumption.  The announcement opens the door to many new foods including insect-enriched snacks, baked goods, pasta, and more.  Mealworms are not actually a worm but the larvae of a specific beetle and are packed with protein and healthy fats and fiber.  People around the world including Africa, Asia, and Latin America have actively consumed for some time.  Environmentalists and foodies alike have long encouraged global citizens consume more insects to accommodate the world’s ballooning population.  Insects are a more sustainable, nutritious, and cost-effective protein source than conventional meats.
