Efficacy of Rubus coreanus Miq. and Astragalus membranaceus Bunge for postmenopausal syndrome

After menopause, women are subject to various psychological and emotional symptoms such as fatigue, depression, insomnia, excitement, due to the rapid decline of estrogen. This single-center, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled study evaluated the effect of 2000 mg supplementation of an extract of Rubus coreanus Moq. and Astragalus membranaceus Bunge (RCAM) in 99 women for 12 weeks, on menopause-associated psychological symptoms.

Among the participants, 59 completed the trial. The results showed a decrease in the Kupperman Index (KI) score (used to assess climacteric symptoms severity) (p < 0.001) and Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) (used to assess the severity of aging-symptoms and their impact on the health-related quality of life) (p = 0.005) in the RCAM group compared to the placebo group. Furthermore, in the safety evaluation, laboratory tests and vital signs showed no clinically significant changes in the subjects, and there were no differences in adverse events between the groups.

Therefore, the extract of R. coreanus Miq. and A. membranaceus Bunge seems to be effective in reducing postmenopausal psychological symptoms in women.
