Cyberattacks and More: Cream Cheese Shortage to Continue

This year hackers have launched cyber attacks against banks, hospitals, and pipelines.  Now they’ve gone after cream cheese.  Bloomberg News reported that in late October there was a cyberattack against the largest producer of cream cheese that crippled production plants and distribution centers for weeks.  Cream cheese producers were already struggling with increasing supply demands leading up to the holidays. Compounding this was a labor shortage and supply chain disruptions that impacted raw materials packaging.  Unlike other foods, cream cheese is not stockpiled and there is no strategic reserve as with maple syrup in Canada.  In 2021, demand for cream cheese jumped by nearly 20%.  The cream cheese shortage is expected to continue into the first quarter of 2022.
