Beneficial effects of chicory seeds and turmeric supplementation on the lipid profile and obesity markers in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, evaluated among 92 patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) the effects of supplementation with either 3 g/d of turmeric or 9 g/d of infused chicory seed (4.5 g /100mL) or both turmeric and chicory seed or a placebo during 12 weeks.
At the end of the supplementation period, results showed a significant decrease in body mass index and waist circumference in chicory and mixture groups (p < 0.05 vs. placebo). Combination of turmeric and chicory seed significantly decreased serum alkaline phosphatase level (p < 0.05). Serum levels of HDL-Cholesterol increased considerably in turmeric and mixture groups (p < 0.05 vs. placebo). Moreover, turmeric and mixture supplementations led to significant reduction in serum levels of triglycerides/HDL-Cholesterol and LDL-Cholesterol/HDL-Cholesterol ratio (p < 0.05 vs. placebo).
In conclusion, turmeric and chicory seed supplementation can be significantly useful in management of NAFLD risk factors.
