Aspartame Ban Ruled Out for UK

The list of permitted food additives for the UK will not change following the Brexit transition period. Recently a group of food safety experts called on the UK government to ban the use of aspartame as an additive claiming the sweetener should not be authorized for unrestricted consumption. The group claims that over a dozen studies done on aspartame indicate the potential for adverse effects on consumers. Aspartame was approved by EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) in 2013 and is the world’s most widely used artificial sweetener. EFSA maintains that the sweetener does not pose health risks at current use levels.
