A Lactobacillus plantarum PS128 supplementation reduces depression and improves sleep in insomniacs

This randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study examined the effects of Lactobacillus plantarum PS128 in40 subjects (20-40 years) with self-reported insomnia. They received the placebo or the probiotic for 30 days, and symptoms of depression, anxiety and sleep quality have been assessed.

Overall, all outcomes were comparable between the two groups at baseline and within the 30-day period. However, compared to the control group, the probiotic group showed significant decreases in Beck Depression Inventory-II scores, fatigue levels, brainwave activity, and awakenings during the deep sleep stage. The improvement in depressive symptoms was related to changes in brain waves and sleep maintenance.

Therefore, these results suggest that a supplementation in Lactobacillus plantarum PS128 may improve depressive symptoms and sleep quality in subjects with insomnia.
