2S-Hesperidin (Citrus sinensis) supplementation improves muscle mass and reduces fat in amateur cyclists
This double-blind, parallel-groups, randomized, placebo-controlled trial was conducted on 40 amateur competitive cyclists receiving either 500 mg/day of 2S-hesperidin (main flavonoid of orange Citrus sinensis) or placebo for 8 weeks.
Results of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry analysis show that, in comparison to placebo, the supplementation decreased the percentage of body fat (-10.4%; p = 0.035) and reduced limb fat mass (-10.5%; p = 0.029). Moreover, evaluation of anthropometric data show a decrease in percentage body fat (-3.7%; p = 0.006), total body fat (-3.0%; p = 0.047), and sum of 8 skinfolds (-6.1%; p = 0.008) in 2S-hesperidin group, but not in placebo group. Additionally, an increase in muscle mass percentage (1.0%; p = <0.001) and total muscle mass (1.7%; p = 0.011) was observed with 2S-hesperidin but not with placebo.
In conclusion, chronic intake of 2S-hesperidin decreases fat mass and promotes muscle development in amateur athletes.
