Where’s the Bacon – Potential California Pork Ban

Pork producers are warning that their products may disappear from shelves in California starting in January due to an initiative that was voted on three years ago.  In 2018 voters approved Proposition 12 which set mandates for living space for farm animals sold for food in California.  The mandates began with egg-laying chickens and went smoothly.  Pork producers pushed back in court, but Proposition 12 was upheld.  Most pork production is done in the Midwest, but the law bans non-compliant pork no matter where it was produced.  Currently, only about four percent of farmers can comply with the new rule making the majority of raw pork products illegal for sale in California starting in January.  Coming into compliance with Proposition 12 will be an expensive process, so pork producers are working with Governor Newsom and hoping to postpone enforcement until farm changes can be made in a more reasonable period.
