The British Meat Processors Association (BMPA) is asking the UK Food Standards Agency to change its guidance on use-by dates for meat by October.  The BMPA is seeking a return to guidance from 2017 that allowed manufacturers and retailers to decide the use-by date themselves and therefore extend this date by up to 10 days in many cases, particularly for meat products that have a high salt content or a low pH.  Extending the shelf life on meat could reduce food waste as well as consumer costs and thereby provide environmental and economic benefits.  Refrigerated beef, lamb and pork are some of the meats that fall under the scope the updated guidance.  The FSA is doing risk assessments to see if a shelf life extension is possible.
