UK Group Calls for Ban on Misleading Claims for Children’s Yogurts

The UK group Action on Sugar is calling for a ban on child friendly yogurt packaging and misleading information related to health claims.  A new product survey shows that only about 5% of children’s yogurts contain low levels of sugar.  The Action on Sugar group based at Queen Mary University in London surveyed 100 children’s yogurts and says that 63% provide one third or more of a four to six-year old’s maximum daily intake for sugar per serving. The group calls for government restrictions on the use of children’s packaging and misleading health claims for these products.  Even though the yogurts contain added sugar, syrups, and fruit concentrates which are all known to harm children’s teeth, calcium, Vitamin D, and protein content are championed as front of pack claims.  This may create a distorted view of the products for consumers and distract parents from the amount of sugar contained in the yogurts.
