U.S. Bird Flu Hits the Southwest

Arizona officials confirmed the first case of bird flu in the Southwest. Bird flu has led to the death of 37 million birds from commercial farms in the central and eastern U.S. The disease has not yet been found in any domestic birds. Bird flu has been detected in 40 states to date with commercial flocks in 19 states being infected. Once the infection is found, birds won’t recover and are killed to prevent spreading the disease. Thus far the bird flu infections and depopulation haven’t impacted egg production. Avian influenza A(H 5) is highly pathogenic and not harmful to wild birds who carry and transmit it. However, it is deadly to domestic birds.
