Time to Wake Up and Smell the (Alternative) Coffee

With a growing number of consumers becoming concerned about the negative effects of caffeine, the market is ready for coffee alternatives. While coffee is a daily source of energy and essential for many, others recognize the ill effects including insomnia, headaches, and anxiety. Many want still want the morning ritual and a little boost in the drawing on other nutrients to replace the caffeine. Tea is becoming more popular as a morning beverage and being formulated to include energy nutrients. These include valerian root, ashwagandha, chicory root, cinnamon, turmeric, and adaptogenic coffees and teas made from mushrooms or other sources. Many of these botanicals offer functional benefits as well including prebiotic or antioxidant capabilities. An increasing consumer segment seems to be trending away from conventional coffee towards other energy ingredients that also offer some functional benefits.
