Salmonella Outbreak Halts Chocolate Manufacturer

The world’s largest chocolate factory which is located in Belgium has temporarily halted production following a positive test for salmonella. On June 27, Barry Callebaut halted chocolate production while it investigates the outbreak. The company explained that lecithin is the cause of the outbreak but is unsure of the scale of the situation. Lecithin, usually from soy, is used to decrease chocolate viscosity making it easier to temper and mold. The company voluntarily informed Belgian food authorities and has paused production indefinitely.
