Recent Study Suggests Link Between Coffee Consumption and Risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Diseases

A new study done by the Krembil Brain Institute suggests there may be a link between coffee consumption and Alzheimer’s disease. The study identified a group of compounds known as phenylindanes that inhibit two protein fragments common to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease from clumping. These compounds emerge naturally during the coffee bean roasting process and are found in greater concentration in dark roast coffees which implies that dark roast coffees may be more protective than light roasts. This information could eventually be useful in creating better therapeutics for both diseases. The Krembil Brain Institute is a nonprofit academic medical research institute.
