Proposed Ruling Could Impact Organic Egg Industry

This month, the Biden administration proposed a US rule that could change the organic egg industry.  The proposed rule requires farmers to give egg-laying chickens outdoor access in order to earn the label “organic”. The long-awaited proposal published by the USDA would eliminate loopholes that let egg producers install open air porches on henhouses instead of providing access to pasture. USDA representatives say this is about animal welfare and animal husbandry practices. Farms would potentially have 15 years to comply.  The proposed rule will now enter a 60-day public comment period.
