New Federal Food Agency Proposed

A bill introduced recently by U.S. Representative Rosa DeLauro who is the Chair of the House Appropriations Committee and Senator Dick Durbin seeks to create a federal agency devoted solely to food safety. The U.S. FDA currently has responsibility for food, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices. For the past thirty years, the Agency has been led primarily by commissioners who were medical doctors rather than food experts. The bill is officially titled the Food Safety Administration Act. Many feel that it is time to create a new agency instead of trying to reform FDA as it currently exists.
