Natural Sweetener Extract Gets Green Light from FDA

Earlier this month the US Food and Drug Administration has confirmed the GRAS (generally recognized as safe) for an additional stevia product via a No Objection letter. The FDA’s No Objection letter expands on the Agency’s previous consideration for Reb A to now include all steviol glycosides extracted from the stevia leaf. Stevia is well known as a natural sweetener and sugar substitute made from the leaves of Stevia rebaudiana which is a shrub-like plant native to Brazil and Paraguay. The active compounds are steviol glycosides, and they are 30-150 times sweeter than sugar. Stevia is heat stable which makes is appropriate for use in many applications including baked goods and confectionery.
