Mung Bean Protein Wins EU Approval
12 April 2022
The key ingredient in Eat Just’s plant-based egg alternative, mung bean protein, has received approval as a novel food from the European Commission. Mung bean (Vigna radiata) is now an authorized novel food that can be used in protein analogues or as a substitute for standard products including meat, fish, or eggs. The authorization process took just two years and represents a landmark EU decision. Mung bean protein is the first legume protein to be deemed safe under the EU’s novel foods framework. The mung beans are sourced from multiple regions including Asia and Africa.
