Maryland crabs utilized to verify the authenticity of seafood spices

A two-year long study funded by the University of Maryland and the Ocean Research Project showed Chesapeake Bay’s blue crabs ability to identify authentic seafood spices. Several dozen crabs were trained with their favorite feed, such as oysters and clams, which contained small amounts of different seafood spices. The studies showed that between 85 and 96% of crabs preferred the taste of Old Bay over non-Maryland spices. The crabs were not tested on spice-infused beer, though (which indeed exists).
