Labeling Sugary Products Nutritious

Can sugary products be labeled nutritious? Clif Bar is one of many companies accused of adding excessive amounts of sugar to a product marketed as nutritious and healthy. As part of a lawsuit settlement Clif Bar has agreed to remove the terms “nourishing” and “nutritious” from select product labels and set aside a$10.5 million fund to settle a class action lawsuit filed in 2018. Currently, the FDA does not define “high” or “low” sugar and only sets terms of use for reduced sugar claims. While FDA does not define high or low sugar levels, plaintiffs in a series of cases filed against Kellogg, Post and other companies say that consumers are being misled.
