The first field trials with genetically modified cotton took place in 1985. GM cotton varieties have been commercially cultivated since 1996. GM cotton has become a major crop, covering over 17 million hectares worldwide.
Currently GM cotton is not cultivated in the EU, though several varieties have been approved for use as food and feed.
