Food Safety and the legal status of Tara (Caesalpinia spinosa)

Tara or Nickernut is a tree native to Peru, with tara gum used as a thickener and dye for industrial and culinary uses. It is rich in tannings and fiber, and promoted for health and wellness purposes. However, Tara in any form does not have GRAS status (Generally Recognized As Safe) under FDA rules, and has not been approved as food additives. Lately, foodborne illnesses after the consumption of Tara have brought up concerns as discussed in this article.
