Last week, the US Food and Drug Administration announced it will conduct an independent investigation of its entire Human Foods program. FDA is partnering with the Reagan-Udall Foundation for the investigation and will issue a report and recommendations within 60 days. FDA Commissioner Robert Califf stressed that the food supply is safe but that the Administration has been stressed by the increasing diversity and complexity of the country’s food systems and supply chain. The fractured jurisdiction of FDA and USDA has long been criticized and subjected to legislative reform efforts. The recent baby formula recall may have tipped the scales towards a structural program overhaul.
