FDA Releases Plan to Improve Foodborne Illness Outbreak Response

Foodborne disease remains a significant public health concern in the United States. On December 9, the US FDA released the Foodborne Outbreak Response Improvement Plan to enhance the speed, coordination, communication, and effectiveness of investigations into outbreaks of foodborne illness. The new plan is intended to work in concert with FDA’s New Era of Smarter Food Safety Blueprint which outlines specific approaches the agency will take over the next decade to address food safety in the rapidly changing global food system. It focuses on four priority areas: root cause analysis, tech-enabled traceability, outbreak data, and operational improvements.
