FDA Amends SOI for Yogurt

On June 11, FDA published in the Federal Register the final rule amending the standard of identity for yogurt per 21 CFR 131.200. The final rule, which has been over a decade coming, became a priority under FDA’s Nutrition Innovation Strategy. Under the scope of the final rule, FDA will eliminate standards of identity for low and non-fat yogurts currently covered under 21 CFR 130.10 which specifies how an SOI food can be modified to use a nutrient content claim. The final rule establishes minimum numbers of active and live cultures for label claims and provides new flexibility for nutritive carbohydrate sweeteners added to yogurt which offers greater flexibility to manufacturers.
